Junior Ballet Gateway Program
The Junior Ballet Gateway Program is designed for dedicated young dancers aged 9-12* who wish to deepen their training in classical ballet while preparing for future entry into our Ballet Intensive Program from age 12.
This program serves as an essential bridge for younger students, developing the technical foundation, strength, and artistry required for success in more advanced training.
Founded as a natural extension of our long-standing Ballet Intensive Program, the Junior Ballet Gateway Program reflects Ottawa Dance Centre School’s commitment to excellence in dance education. Many of our Intensive Program graduates began their journey in this junior pathway, moving seamlessly into more rigorous study and, in many cases, progressing to professional training schools and careers in dance.
*Students must be turning 9 by December 31, 2026
Junior Ballet Gateway Program Structure
Students in the Junior Ballet Gateway Program will train twice per week in classical ballet, focusing on building correct technique, musicality, coordination, and a love of the art form. The program integrates elements of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus, adapted for younger students, to ensure a progressive and structured approach to learning.
In addition to their weekly ballet training, Junior Ballet students now participate in a weekly contemporary dance class as part of the core curriculum. Introducing contemporary at this stage encourages creativity, artistry, and self-expression while helping students develop confidence in moving their bodies in new and versatile ways. Complementing their classical ballet foundation, contemporary training fosters musicality, coordination, adaptability, and a broader understanding of dance, supporting the development of well-rounded young artists.
During the Junior Program students participate in special events such as our annual ODCS professional photoshoot, the festive ODCS Christmas Fundraiser, and our spectacular double-performance weekend at the end of the year. Dancers may also be eligible to audition for select productions, such as The Nutcracker, giving them valuable stage experience.
Pathway to the Ballet Intensive Program
The Junior Ballet Gateway Program provides students with the tools and readiness to be assessed for the Ballet Intensive Program upon turning 12, if they are deemed ready. It develops strong technique, disciplined work habits, and an understanding of the commitment required for more advanced training, while maintaining a supportive and engaging environment. Delivering both technical skill and personal growth, the Junior Ballet Gateway Program cultivates confidence, artistry, and the discipline necessary for success in dance.
